From new technology on our buses and bus stops, to new services, to surging ridership, there is so much work to do work that is challenging and truly fulfilling. What do you like the most about what you do now at RTA? We are powered by experience, inspired by our customers, and motivated to push the limits of what’s possible in public transportation. Plenty has changed since 1977, but one thing remains true: RTA’s pledge to deliver world-class service to every customer, every trip. Today, our buses are handling 8.9 million boardings a year, and we are proud to partner with a record-seven colleges and universities in the region to give their students unlimited rides. We are witnessing leaps in ridership, bold new services, and breatkthroughs in technology. It was here on when just 60 pioneering employees working out of a converted gas station launched service with 26 used vehicles, six routes, and a slogan that boldly proclaimed “RTA is here to stay.” This year, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary, I’m pleased to say that RTA has made good on that original pledge. What, in your opinion, has changed the most about RTA in that time?Įnthusiasm has lived at RTA for a long time. Ten years later you joined the agency as superintendent of maintenance. Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) was established as a Joint Powers Agency on Augand began operating bus service on March 16, 1977. He also earned certificates in total quality management, advanced business, management and executive business management from the University of California, Riverside, and a certificate in bus fleet management techniques from Indiana University. Larry is a graduate of the University of Redlands, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in business administration and management. He has been RTA’s chief executive officer since 2001. He has been with RTA since 1988, holding several positions, including maintenance director, human resources director, information technologies director, deputy general manager and general manager. Larry Rubio has 39 years of transit experience that began in 1978 at the Orange County Transit District. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, among the largest in the nation. RTA provides public transportation for western Riverside County, operating 36 local fixed routes, eight CommuterLink express routes and Dial-A-Ride service.
